Preparing for your Maternity Session

Thanks so much for reserving your session! I am thrilled to meet you and your newest addition!

Below are instructions to help your maternity session go smoothly!

What to Wear

Form fitting clothing is best. We really want to show off your belly. Maxi dresses or a bodycon knee length dress is great. Lace can be beautiful. You’ll just want to stay away from anything too busy with lots of texture or ruffles. You can also wear jeans with a more form fitting top. Solids are great, but don’t be afraid of patterns/florals. Neon or super bright colors aren’t recommended as they cast shadows on the skin. Ultimately, wear what makes you feel beautiful!

Accessories and layers can be great, like jewelry, a hat, scarf, boots, sweater, kimono, jacket, etc. I'm happy to offer outfit help if you’d like to email some my way. :)

Undergarments may be seen through your clothing, so just be mindful of this. Sometimes tight maternity dresses can show panty or spanx and bra lines. I can edit this out if needed, but anything you can do to help minimize this is great.

Hair and Makeup

I always suggest getting your hair or makeup done if you can, but it’s not required. If you do your own hair and makeup, I suggest going a bit heavier on the makeup, and bring along some hairspray to hold down any fly-aways.

You nails will likely be in the photos, so you may want to consider a mani/pedi.

Spouses

Guys usually look great in some dark jeans and a button up (sleeves rolled up is a great option), sweater, or nice shirt. We want the outfit to coordinate rather than match. Neutrals are always great for guys so you stand out (cream, gray, blue, pink, white, tan).

Siblings

Other children look great with coordinating outfits as well. I always recommend having at least three colors in your palette, especially with family. Adding in a couple patterns can be nice. A solid shirt for one and maybe some striped or pattern for another. Remember, the key is to coordinate, so the colors in your prints and patterns are your friend. If your personality is suited to a more subtle look, neutrals photograph beautifully as well. You can easily keep your color scheme neutral and add in smaller amounts of color for variety.

Location

Let me know the look you're wanting for your maternity session (fields, trees/foliage, modern, urban, city, etc?) and I can offer some suggestions and send over some galleries to check out. If you already know where you’d like to go, let me know and I’ll make sure of the best time of day to photograph there.

What to Bring

Comfy shoes for walking (if yours aren’t as comfortable)

Water

Snacks/bribes for the little ones that won’t stain clothing or skin. I recommend giving the bribes after the session so nothing has to be taken away and cause any unhappiness

Extra lipstick and makeup for touch-ups, and hairspray

If you'd like to incorporate any special baby items, that's also great, but not needed if that's not your thing

Pets are always welcome

A babysitter or family member for little ones if you want to do some with just you and your spouse

Posing

I try to keep it pretty simple and capture as natural moments as possible. Let me know if you have any specific poses you're wanting. I love to capture connection with you and baby and spouse and other children. I’ll always want you to be connecting with baby with a hand on your belly. I’ll guide you throughout with directions on what to do. If your other children aren’t cooperating, try to remain calm. We will work with what they are giving and maybe even take a break. We want them to have fun and enjoy this time as well, and playing with them can help them to have a good time.

Relax and have fun. We want you to enjoy this beautiful time and soak it all in. Looking forward to your session!
